BUCCANEERS END 11-GAME LOSING STREAK

One of the team's new players helped see to it that this Salem team would not break an old - and hardly positive - record Saturday night.

Catcher Felix Antigua, pinch hitting for Tim Hines in the ninth inning, hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to give the Buccaneers a 2-1 Carolina League baseball victory over Peninsula. The win ended an 11-game losing streak and kept the Bucs from approaching the franchise record of 13 defeats in a row in 1982.

With the score 1-1 in the ninth, Bruce Schreiber led off with a single to left and Domingo Merejo reached safely with a bunt single. Mandy Romero then singled sharply to left to load the bases.

Peninsula starter Jeff Darwin (6-10) was replaced by ace reliever Oscar Rivas, who gave up Antigua's sacrifice fly.

Hines got the other Salem run with a solo homer in the fifth inning, his seventh.

One of the Buccaneers who has been here all season, pitcher Tim Wakefield, had just as much to do with the win. He hurled eight innings of five-hit ball in running his record to 6-11, including 3-0 at Peninsula's War Memorial Stadium.

"It's just a coincidence, my winning here," said Wakefield, the only knuckleballer in the Pittsburgh Pirates' organization and one of only two in the minor leagues. "I really didn't have great stuff tonight to tell you the truth, but I'm learning how to pitch."

In the second of a three-game series tonight, Keith Richardson (0-1) will pitch for Salem against Kevin King (0-0).
