POST 3 SOUTH WINS LEGION TITLE 22-5

Kevin Gabbert went the distance, striking out 13 and allowing only two earned runs in Roanoke Post 3 South's 22-5 bruising of Martinsville Post 42 in the American Legion Blue Ridge District baseball championship Saturday at Municipal Field in Salem.

Jason Whorley was 3-for-5 with five RBI, including a two-run homer in the second inning; Jared Saunders was 3-for-4 with three RBI; and Barry Shelton was 2-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBI.

Martinsville ended its season at 15-5.

South (15-3), the regular season champion, won its second straight title and third in the last four years. The team advances to the state American Legion tournament on Aug. 8 at Robinson High School in Fairfax.
