ROANOKE TEEN-AGER SHOT SEVEN TIMES

A Roanoke teen-ager was shot seven times from behind as he tried to run from a gunman late Saturday on Melrose Avenue in Northwest Roanoke.

Troy Lorenzo Gardner, 19, of Bennett Drive Northwest, was found lying face down in the median strip along the 3400 block of Melrose Avenue shortly after 11 p.m., police said.

He was shot in the foot, the knee, the left thigh, the right buttocks and three times in the lower back. Police said one of the bullets lodged close to his spinal cord.

He was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where his condition was not released. However, police said that hospital personnel had told them Gardner's wounds were not life-threatening. Shell casings found near Gardner indicated he was shot with a large-caliber semiautomatic weapon.

No arrests have been made, but police were looking for a man about the same age as Gardner who they believe may have fled to New Jersey. No motive for the shooting was given.

Two women in the area heard the shots and then heard Gardner yelling for help from the median. The two women told police they saw a man flee on foot and disappear behind a nearby store.
