Johnson, 45, of 6628 Northway Drive in Roanoke County, was in his 1989 four-wheel-drive vehicle traveling east in the 3000 block of Hershberger at about 8:30 p.m. when he was stopped by Roanoke police officer R.L. Harman.
He was charged with DUI and taken to the Roanoke City Jail where he agreed to a blood-alcohol level test. The results of that test were not available early this morning.
Johnson also was given a summons for following behind another vehicle too closely. He is scheduled to appear in Roanoke General District Court on Sept. 25.
He was released less than two hours after his arrest and ordered not to operate a motor vehicle until after 6 a.m. this morning. he will remain free on a $300 personal recognizance bond until his court hearing in September.
DUI is a misdemeanor offense and carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.
Johnson, a Democrat, was elected to the Hollins seat on the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors in 1985 after serving on the county Planning Commission for a year.
He served as chairman of the Board of Supervisors in 1987. He also had served as chairman of the Planning Commission.
A former teacher and wrestling coach, Johnson worked as a local lobbyist for the Virginia Education Association for 14 years before resigning to start his own development company last year.
