SLAUGHTER LEADS STRONG FIELD IN STATE AMATEUR

Despite the absence of defending champion and five-time winner Donna Andrews, the 65th annual Virginia Women's Amateur golf tournament presents a strong field in today's qualifying round.

Eleven players, headed by 1990 NCAA champion Susan Slaughter of Floyd, have handicaps of less than three. Nineteen others in the 67-player field at The Homestead's Cascades Course have handicaps of less than seven.

A scholarship member of the Arizona team, Slaughter plays at scratch. Three-time winner Jane Mack of Richmond has a half-stroke handicap.

Andrews is now a touring pro, but the field is laden with former champions. In addition to Mack, they include 1983 winner Anne Patrick of Richmond, two-time title holder Kay Schiefelbein of Dumfries and five-time champion Robbye King Youel of Charlottesville, who returns to state tournament play after an absence of more than 15 years.

Following today's qualifying, the low-scoring 16 players begin match play Tuesday, leading to Friday's 18-hole championship.

Defending champion Joan Darden heads a field of 70 players in the 35th women's senior championship over the Homestead Course.

Among the other strong contenders is Audrey Najjum, a three-time winner from Roanoke. - Associated Press
