PIEDMONT ALL-STARS WIN IN AAU BASKETBALL PLAY

Jeff Reid of Patrick County High School scored 38 points Sunday to lead the Piedmont All-Stars to a 102-87 victory in the AAU national basketball championships.

The Piedmont All-Stars, from Bassett, Va., defeated the North Polar Bears from Des Moines, Iowa. The Polar Bears were the fifth-seeded team in the tournament.

Maurice DeShazo of Bassett and Travis Wells of Martinsville added 17 points apiece for the Piedmont All-Stars, and Troy Brandon of Martinsville chipped in 14 points.

The Piedmont All-Stars, seeded 27th, play again Tuesday against the New Orleans Spartans, the eighth-seeded team. - Staff report
