JET SKIERS UNHURT IN 3-WAY COLLISION

Three jet ski operators escaped injury Sunday in a three-way collision on Smith Mountain Lake.

Two of the operators were charged with reckless operation in the 5:20 p.m. accident near Hales Ford Bridge.

R.L. George of the state Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, said the accident happened when two men and a 17-year-old juvenile, who were riding rental jet skis in a triangle formation, scrambled to avoid an oncoming boat.

Calvin Homer Archbold, 29, of Bradenton, Fla., ran his jet ski over the top of a craft operated by the juvenile. Then, Joe C. Ferri, 32, also of Bradenton, collided with the juvenile's craft, George said.

"It was a mess out there," George said, "but no one was hurt."

Archbold and Ferri were summoned to appear in Bedford County General District Court Sept. 10.
