FRANKLIN ROAD BRIDGE TO CLOSE FOR REPAIRS AGAIN THIS WEEKEND

The Franklin Road bridge over the Norfolk and Western Railway tracks in Southwest Roanoke will be closed this weekend while construction crews do repair work on the bridge deck.

The bridge will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday until 7 a.m. Monday.

It will be the second weekend this summer that the bridge has been closed, and another closing is planned in late August.

One lane of the deck is being poured each weekend.

"After we pour the lane, we need about 24 hours without vibrations so the concrete can dry and cure," said John Peters, a city engineer.

Peters said the bridge rehabilitation project is expected to be finished by the middle of September. Lanford Brothers, a Roanoke Valley company, is the contractor for the $481,293 project.

Signs will be posted alerting motorists to the closing and the detour.

Northbound traffic on Franklin Road can travel east on Reserve Avenue to Jefferson Street and then north on Jefferson to Williamson Road, which intersects with Franklin Road near downtown. Southbound traffic can follow the same detour in reverse order.
