MILLER, GREENE SPARK STREAKING BUCS

The Salem Buccaneers began their series against the Peninsula Pilots with an 11-game losing streak hanging like an anchor around their necks. But the nearby sea air seems to have revived the ailing Bucs, who defeated the Pilots 4-0 Monday and won their third straight game.

Paul Miller (7-6) went all the way for Salem, allowing just five hits. He walked none and allowed no runner past second base while facing just 29 hitters, two above the minimum. Miller coaxed the Pilots into 17 ground outs.

Willie Greene provided hitting support. Greene, one of six new players brought to Salem last week, belted his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the fourth inning.

Greene also scored a run in the sixth after ripping a one-out triple to right. He came home on fellow newcomer Austin Manahan's single to center.

In the seventh inning, the old guard stepped forward. Bruce Schreiber singled to left and Jeff Nelson (1-2), who took the loss for Peninsula, walked Domingo Merejo and Mandy Romero to load the bases. Marcos Garcia came on in relief of Nelson, but Tim Hines stroked Garcia's first pitch to left for a double to knock in the Bucs' final two runs.

\ BUCSHOTS: Schreiber began the current road trip hitting .203 on the road. But after going 12-for-21 on this trip, his overall average is up to .299. Schreiber went 9-for-13 against Peninsula. . . . Salem pitchers have held Peninsula to one run on 13 hits in the series. . . . The Bucs return home tonight to begin a three-game series with the Kinston Indians.
