COREAST TO DROP FREE CHECKING

One of the last free regular checking accounts is about to disappear from the Roanoke banking market. CorEast Savings Bank last week notified its depositors that minimum balances will be required to avoid service charges on their accounts. CorEast has had free regular checking since it was created in March 1988.

Starting in August, regular checking customers must maintain a $500 average balance to avoid a $6 monthly service fee. Customers with interest checking accounts previously have been required to maintain a $500 balance to avoid a charge. Now they must have an average of $2,000 in the account or pay a service charge of $8 a month.

Steve Whitley, senior vice president for retail banking, confirmed that a minimum deposit also will be required in statement savings accounts starting in October. Customers who fail to keep a $200 quarterly average after that will be charged $6 a quarter. - Staff report
