The bill approved by voice vote Monday would require that specific information about nutritional value and number of calories be highlighted on food labels by larger type, bold type or contrasting color.
It also would require that any claims about the food be consistent with government definitions. For example, if a product claims to be low in salt, the manufacturer must be using the standards set by the Department of Health and Human Services.
Similar legislation is pending in the Senate.
