The unidentified victims were seriously but not critically injured in the attack Monday night, Fire Chief Robert Howard said.
The two were shot with a small caliber handgun, Howard said.
W.M. McCracken, vice president of nursing at Williamsburg Community Hospital, confirmed today that the woman had a bullet lodged in her face. The man was shot in the side of the face and the bullet exited through the ear.
McCracken said the woman was admitted and is in satisfactory condition today. She said the man was treated at the emergency room Monday night and released.
She said the hospital could not release the names of the victims because relatives have not been notified.
The shooting occurred about 8:40 p.m. in front of the Wythe House in the heart of the restored colonial town and museum.
Two suspects fled in a white car, according to a police dispatch.
Jim Bradley, a spokesman for the museum, said he had no information about the incident. Colonial Williamsburg Security Chief Danny McDaniel refused to provide any information and city police investigating the crime could not be reached late Monday.
Monday night's robbery was the latest in a string of evening muggings in the dimly lit Historic Area.
Tourists have reported at least four other muggings in the same area since late May. Only one arrest has been made in the four incidents. In the first six months of 1990, 24 crimes were reported in the Historic Area, according to city police.
