CLIBURN TO RETURN FOR BUCS

It will be awhile before the Pittsburgh Pirates decide which players they will send to the Salem Buccaneers, but they've already made up their minds about who will guide the Class A Carolina League affiliate.

Chet Montgomery, Pittsburgh's director of minor-league operations, said Stan Cliburn will return for his second stint with the Bucs. The team was 55-84 last season.

Cliburn, a former catcher in the California Angels, Atlanta Braves and Pirates systems, will begin his fourth season as a manager.

The Buccaneers will have a new pitching coach in Tom Dettore, who was with the Class A Augusta (Ga.) Pirates last season. Dettore, 42, will be making his third stop in three seasons, moving up a level each year.

Returning to Salem will be trainer Sandy Krum.

Chris Lein, the Bucs' pitching coach last season, has joined the Baltimore Orioles organization as a coach at Bluefield (W.Va.) of the Appalachian League.

With Pittsburgh relocating its Class AA minor-league affiliate from Harrisburg, Pa., to the Raleigh, N.C., area, the distance between it and Class A Salem will be considerably closer.

But just because player moves between Salem and the Carolina Mudcats will be more convenient, Montgomery said that doesn't mean they will occur more often.

"It wouldn't have any effect whatsoever," Montgomery said of the proximity of the two locations. "If a player is going to move up, he's going to do so anyway. We're going to place a player in a position or league that we think is best for him."

Pittsburgh needed a new Class AA team because the Harrisburg (Pa.) Senators - which was with the Pirates for the past four years and three years before that when the club was in Nashua, N.H., - chose to sign on with the Montreal Expos when its player development contract with the Pittsburgh expired after last season.

Carolina is a member of the Southern League. Last season the team played in Columbus, Ga., and was affiliated with the Houston Astros.

The Mudcats are scheduled to play in Five County Stadium, which is under construction in Zebulon, N.C., a town about 15 miles east of Raleigh on Interstate 40.

\ BUCSHOTS: Salem general manager Sam Lazzaro said that because of the additional financial commitment minor-league teams must make to their major-league affiliate, tickets for individual Buccaneers games will increase by 50 cents. Box seats will be $4, reserved $3.50 and general admission $3. Season tickets and general-admission ticket books, however, will remain the same as last season. Season tickets for 70 home games are $150 for box seats, $120 for reserved and $90 for general admission. Ticket books come in 35-game packages for $50 and 20-game packages for $35. Youth and senior citizen tickets will continue to be $1 off the regular ticket price.
