FBI ARRESTS GILES MAN ON DRUG CHARGES

The FBI has arrested a Giles County man on charges of conspiracy and possession of marijuanna with intent to distribute, the bureau's office in Richmond reported Thursday.

Edmund M. Ricci Jr., 44, identified by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a Pearisburg real estate agent, faces life imprisonment and a fine of $8 million if convicted of all charges, an FBI news release said.

Ricci was arrested in Blacksburg Wednesday. He was among seven men indicted Tuesday by a federal grand jury in Philadelphia. The others are from Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Michigan.

The FBI in Richmond said Ricci and the others were indicted in connection with a five-ton, multimillion-dollar marijuana transaction conducted in the fall of 1986.

Ricci and another defendant were specifically charged with with buying about 1 1/2 tons of marijuanna in that transaction, the FBI said.

Ricci appeared before U.S. Magistrate Glen E. Conrad in Roanoke and was still in custody in lieu of $50,000 bond.
