Chapman, 6 feet 4 and 280 pounds, picked the Hokies over West Virginia and Marshall.
"At first, he was leaning heavily toward West Virginia," said Roger Jefferson, Chapman's coach at Capital High School. "He changed his mind after his visit to Tech."
Tech also received a commitment from Trenton Bass from Bladensburg (Md.) High. Bass (6-5, 240) was an All-Prince George's County selection on offense and had 98 tackles, including 13 sacks, on defense.
Virginia received its 14th known commitment from defensive back Mike Wardlaw of Valley Forge (Pa.) Military Academy. Wardlaw (6-1, 190) was rated one of the top 25 prospects in Virginia in 1990, when he played at Potomac High School.
Wardlaw signed with James Madison out of high school, but he did not meet Proposition 48 guidelines for freshman eligibility. Now eligible, he picked the Cavaliers over Georgia Tech and Louisiana State.
Jefferson said Chapman has the required test scores, but must improve his grade-point average to be eligible for Tech.
