BLOCKBUSTER BOWL COURTS ACC

The Blockbuster Bowl will court the Atlantic Coast Conference for a possible tie-in when the league holds its annual winter meeting in Fort Lauderdale next week.

The ACC has one year remaining on a four-year agreement with the New Year's Day Citrus Bowl in Orlando. The Citrus and Blockbuster bowls each had a payout of about $1.3 million last season.

The inaugural Blockbuster Bowl, pitting Penn State against Florida State, was played at Miami's Joe Robbie Stadium last Dec. 28. Blockbuster officials hope to land a national television deal and have discussed moving their game to New Year's Eve.

"We've heard from a number of people," said Tom Mickle, assistant ACC commissioner. "We've heard from the Blockbuster and the Fiesta, and we're going to listen to what the Citrus has to say. But Blockbuster asked us to consider holding our winter meetings in Fort Lauderdale, and we were receptive."

The meeting will be next Thursday through Saturday. Sessions typically are devoted to planning and brainstorming, and no voting is expected, Mickle said Friday.

The Blockbuster Bowl, sponsored by the Fort Lauderdale-based Blockbuster video rental giant, will be host to a dinner Thursday for the ACC and will make a presentation.

"Whether we potentially have an agreement with them or not, our main purpose is to say, `Here we are. This is what we did in our first year,' " said Blockbuster Bowl President Richard Giannini. - Associated Press
