200 STUDENTS GATHER FOR ALL-DISTRICT BAND

Pulaski County's population increased by about 200 Friday, as student musicians arrived to participate in the annual All-District Band rehearsals and performances this weekend.

Pulaski County High School is the host for the All-District Band this year. The bands will perform Sunday in the school's Little Theatre starting at 2 p.m.

The performances are free to the public and usually feature a mix of musical types, from classical to modern.

The district covers 33 Southwestern Virginia schools from Pulaski County all the way west to Lee County. Each year, top band students from those schools audition for placement in all-district concert and symphonic bands.

The 200 students stay with host families, most of whom have children of their own in the band here. Rehearsals are held all weekend in preparation for the public program on Sunday under conductors brought to Pulaski for the program.

This year's conductors are Thomas Fraschillo, from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, for the symphonic band, and Chris Chang, band director at Langston Junior High School near Danville, for the concert band.
