COMMUNITIES PLAN RALLIES OF SUPPORT

A rally in support of Southwest Virginia troops serving in the Persian Gulf will be held in Wytheville today and in Marion and Hillsville on Sunday with another Wytheville rally in a week.

WMEV, a Marion radio station, and the Wythe County Ruritan Clubs will sponsor a rally today from noon to 1 p.m. at Wytheville Community College in the Grayson Hall Commons.

All Smyth County veterans have been invited to a rally Sunday at the county courthouse in Marion starting at 3 p.m. This will be the second rally for Marion, where a Jan. 25 gathering drew more than 500 people, according to WMEV spokesman Gary White.

In Hillsville, a rally is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Sunday. It will include a march from the VFW Building to the Carroll County Courthouse.

Still another Wytheville rally is set for Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. in the George Wythe High School auditorium. It will include a performance by the Wytheville Community College Concert Band, sing-alongs of patriotic music played by Thelma Fulton, and speakers such as state Sen. Daniel Bird, D-Wytheville, and Del. Thomas Jackson, D-Hillsville.

That rally is sponsored by American Legion Post No. 9, the Southwest Virginia Enterprise and WYVE Radio, which will broadcast it live.
