PHOTO'S A WINNER

Wayne Deel, a photographer with the Roanoke Times & World-News, was honored Friday night for taking the 1990 Virginia AP LaserPhoto of the Year.

Deel received the award at the annual meeting of the Virginia Associated Press Newspapers.

The winning picture was of Virginia football coach George Welsh. It was taken during Georgia Tech's 41-38 upset of then-No. 1 Virginia in Charlottesville.

Robin Layton Kinsley of The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star of Norfolk won second place for a picture of a Marine hugging his daughter as he prepared to ship out to the Persian Gulf.

The winning photographs were selected from among hundreds that move annually on the Virginia AP LaserPhoto network.
