POLLUTION CUTS ORDERED TO REDUCE CANYON HAZE

The Environmental Protection Agency, saying it was acting to protect the Grand Canyon, on Friday ordered a nearby power plant to drastically cut its pollution.

Environmental groups, however, accused the agency of backing down.

The environmentalists criticized the EPA for retreating from requiring a 90 percent cut.

Instead, the EPA said it would require the Navajo Generating Station to reduce sulfur-dioxide emissions by 70 percent. - Associated Press
