ROCKY MOUNT OKS PLANT

Town Council has voted to go ahead with plans to build a new sewage treatment plant on the Pigg River, east of town limits.

On Thursday, council voted 5-1 to authorize the consulting firm of Mattern & Craig to design construction plans that could be ready for bids at the end of the year.

Construction is expected to last 18 months, according to Town Manager Mark Henne.

The proposed plant would have a capacity of 2 million gallons per day, up from the current plant's capacity of 800,000 gallons.

Henne said Friday that the cost projection has been reduced nearly $1 million, to $10.4 million, because the state Water Control Board apparently will not require tertiary treatment of effluent discharged into the Pigg River.

Councilman Arnold Dillon cast the only vote against the plan.
