Patrick Henry used its quickness and speed Friday night to race to a convincing 77-47 victory over Franklin County in a Roanoke Valley District boys' high school basketball game.
The victory left the Patriots (12-4 overall, 4-0 in the district) atop the RVD standings, and the Eagles (1-13, 0-4) remained in the cellar.
"This was a total team effort," Patrick Henry coach Woody Deans said. "This was the best overall effort we have had all year. Our kids really came ready to play."
Deans' assessment was on target. It took the district leaders all of 60 seconds to warm to the task.
Franklin County's Kenny Wade got the game's first basket, but that was the only time the Eagles led.
Once the Patriots scored a minute into the game, it was no contest. Twice they held leads of 38 points.
Monty Anderson got Patrick Henry rolling by scoring six straight points. First, he broke free for an uncontested layup, then followed up with a medium-range jumper and a dunk.
Two free throws by Troy Anderson and a basket by Toby Webb increased the Patriots' lead to 10-2, but Chris Mattox scored eight points to keep the Eagles relatively close, at 16-10, at the end of the first quarter.
Patrick Henry came out running to start the second quarter. In less than two minutes, the Patriots went on a 10-2 run, scoring mostly on fast breaks. By the end of the quarter, they had outscored Franklin County 28-7 and held a 44-17 lead.
The Patriots increased their lead to 64-31 at the end of the third quarter. Franklin County won the final quarter 16-13, but PH was substituting freely.
"I think they [the Patriots] have an excellent ball club," Franklin County coach Ed Holstrom said. "We just can't keep up with a team that has as much overall quickness as they have. We were in the game early when we were able to control the tempo, but once they were able to control the tempo, then we were simply out of it."
All 12 Patriots who entered the game scored. Webb and Monty Anderson paced the offense with 17 and 15 points, respectively.
"This is the best team effort we have had all year," Webb said, "and this is the best we have ever run our fast break."
Anderson said, "We overpowered them in every department."
Patrick Henry dominated the rebounding at both ends of the court and forced 24 turnovers while giving up the ball only five times. The Patriots also outshot the Eagles 47 percent (34-of-72) to 38 percent (19-of-50).
The Patriots' only weakness: 8-of-30 shooting at the free-throw line.
