U.S. HAD TO ACT AS GLOBAL BIG BROTHER

I HAVE COME to realize that many Americans think the struggle for the liberation of Kuwait is strictly a blood-for-oil situation. This is erroneous.

Indeed, if oil were the only factor, or even a major factor, in our current military involvement, there would not be an American presence in the Persian Gulf. For the past 80 years, it has been necessary for the United States to act as a sort of global big brother, protecting our allies, weak and strong, from the forces of tyranny.

Perhaps some of you recall a nation called Germany, and a man going by the name of Adolf Hitler, some 50 years ago. Were it not for U.S. intervention, all of Europe might have fallen before the might of the Third Reich.

Were it not for U.S. intervention in the Middle East and other regions, the Saddam Husseins of the world would extend their white-hot tendrils of fear and oppression throughout the globe; and if that should happen, my friends, may God have mercy upon us all. BRUCE H. RUSSELL II RICHLANDS
