VIRGINIA SHAKES GEORGIA TECH

Tonya Cardoza scored five of her 10 points in the final 2:08 Saturday night to rally top-ranked Virginia to a 98-94 women's basketball victory over pesky Atlantic Coast Conference foe Georgia Tech.

It was the ninth straight victory for Virginia (20-1 overall, 8-0 ACC).

Georgia Tech (12-8, 1-8) lost at University Hall for the 11th time in as many games.

The Lady Jackets, shooting 57 percent for the game, were ahead for much of the second half. They took their final lead at 87-85 on a pair of free throws by Karen Lounsbury with 4:06 to play.

Virginia went ahead to stay at 89-87 on Dawn Staley's basket at the 2:35 mark - the 16th lead change of the game. Cardoza followed with an acrobatic reverse layup and free throw to push the Cavaliers' lead to five points.

After a baseline drive by Georgia Tech's Joyce Pierce cut it to three with 1:16 to go, Cardoza's steal and layup made it 96-91 Virginia with 44 seconds left.

Lounsbury's 3-pointer 14 seconds later cut it to 96-94 before Virginia's Tammie Reiss added a pair of free throws.

Staley led Virginia, which wound up shooting 51 percent, with 23 points and Reiss added 22. Heather Burge had 14.
