TEACH NO SEX, NOT SAFE SEX

I READ with great interest the Jan. 5 story about sex education. In fact, I was so impressed with the remarks of Sevgi Aral that I wrote to him/her at the Centers for Disease Control.

The AIDS virus is 400 times smaller than human semen. If condoms have a failure rate of 15 to 18 percent for preventing human conception, what is the failure rate for preventing AIDS? God help our poor young people when eighth-graders are told, via the teaching video, "You kids have got to use condoms." How about telling them: "Don't do it. It can kill you - condoms are not safe"?

We are condemning our young people to death when we say "practice safe sex - use condoms." Let us have courage and use scientific information to prevent the terrible scourge of sexually transmitted diseases and death-dealing AIDS. THELMA M. MORRISON ROUTE 2, TROUTDALE
