CAROLINA ANGLERS LAND TROPHIES DURING SMITH MOUNTAIN OUTINGS

Fishermen are reporting improved success with striped bass at Smith Mountain Lake, where several citation catches recently have been registered.

Leading the way have been North Carolina fishermen. Mike Coley of Julian, N.C., caught a 31-pound, 2-ounce striper on a bucktail while Brian McGraw of Kemersville, N.C., hooked a 31-pound, 10-ounce trophy on a shad, his first striper ever.

Both fish were weighed at Magnum Point Marina, on the upper Blackwater River arm of the lake.

Charles Bowles of North Tazewell landed a 20-pound, 4-ounce striper.

Richard Clark of Salem caught a 5-pound, 12-ounce walleye at Smith Mountain, along with stripers weighing 15 and 17 pounds. He was using large minnows.

Virginia trout's season ended Friday, but anglers still may cast to special regulation streams, including a section of Smith River below Philpott Dam in Henry County. Trout have been landed there by fly fishermen, especially those working weighted nymphs deep, said Robert Bryant, of Bryant's Sport Center in Martinsville.

Trout stocking i underway in West Virginia, where there is a year-round season. New this year, fishermen can learn about the latest stockings and stream conditions through a hotline, 304-348-3399. It is updated each Tuesday and Thursday.
