STEELWORKERS, USX REACH AGREEMENT

A tentative contract agreement was reached early Sunday by negotiators for the United Steel Workers and USX Corp.

Agreement on the three-year pact covering 20,000 workers came about 30 minutes after a midnight strike deadline passed Saturday.

Union President Lynn Williams explained the settlement to the union local presidents, who will vote on the contract today or Tuesday, when the terms are put on paper, union spokesman Gary Hubbard said. No formal vote was taken at the midnight meeting.

As members of the union's bargaining committee, the presidents can accept or reject a tentative contract.

The tentative pact would raise hourly pay $1.50 the first year and 50 cents each of the next two years, union negotiator Andrew "Lefty" Palm said. Current wages average $10.84 per hour.
