DESERTION SUSPECT NOT JAILED

Military officials decided Sunday that an Army Reserve doctor accused of desertion will not be jailed pending a court-martial.

Yolanda Huet-Vaughn surrendered to military officials Saturday.

After a pretrial hearing Sunday, she was "returned to the control of her unit commander" at Fort Leonard Wood, said a base spokesman, Brad Rose.

Rose would not offer specifics on any restrictions placed on Huet-Vaughn. She was staying at Fort Leonard Wood on Sunday, he said.

No date had been set for a court-martial, said Rose. Huet-Vaughn faces up to 15 years in prison, a fine and a dishonorable discharge if found guilty.

Huet-Vaughn said she left her unit, which was activated Dec. 20, because she opposes the Persian Gulf war.
