KELLY LEADS AFC TO PRO BOWL VICTORY

Jim Kelly had a better Sunday to finish off the 1990 NFL season.

The Buffalo Bills quarterback threw two touchdown passes, the second a 13-yarder to Ernest Givins of the Houston Oilers with 1:49 remaining, to give the AFC a 23-21 victory over the NFC in the Pro Bowl.

Unlike last week's Super Bowl, Kelly was on the other side as a team failed to kick a game-winning field goal in the final seconds. Last week, it was Buffalo's Scott Norwood who failed on a 47-yarder as Buffalo lost to the New York Giants 20-19.

Sunday night, it was the NFC's Morten Andersen of New Orleans who failed to come through, when his 46-yarder was blocked with seven seconds to play by Miami's Jeff Cross.

Kelly, a frustrated sideline onlooker in the Super Bowl as the Giants' time-consuming offense controlled the ball, completed 13 of 19 passes for 210 yards while splitting playing time with the Oilers' Warren Moon.

Kelly's other touchdown pass was a 20-yarder to Buffalo teammate Andre Reed early in the final quarter.

Detroit's Barry Sanders, the NFL's leading rusher this season, ran 22 yards for a touchdown with 5:11 remaining to give the NFC a 21-13 lead.

Nick Lowery of Kansas City then cut the AFC deficit to 21-16 with his third field goal of the game, a 34-yarder with 2:58 remaining.

Kelly and Reed hooked up on their scoring pass and the AFC closed to 14-13 early in the final quarter.

Phoenix rookie Johnny Johnson scored two touchdowns for the NFC on runs of 1 and 9 yards.

Johnson gave the NFC a 14-6 lead with his second touchdown of the game, with 1:04 remaining in the third quarter.

Johnson, who rushed for 926 yards this season despite missing most of three games with an ankle injury, gave the NFC a 7-3 lead when he dove over a yard out 43 seconds before halftime.

Kansas City's Nick Lowery's second field goal of the game, a 43-yarder, pulled the AFC to 7-6 midway through the third quarter, after Buffalo's Bruce Smith blocked a field goal try by Andersen.

Moon marched the AFC to a 26-yard Lowery field goal on the opening series of the game.

On a less-than-banner day for the place-kickers, Andersen also had his 48-yard try blocked by Smith in the third quarter.

Thomas ran for a game-high 38 yards in seven carries and caught four passes for 36 yards.

Jim Everett completed 13 of 18 passes for 138 yards for the NFC.
