IMPORTED GOODS ALSO CREATE JOBS HERE

ALTHOUGH Frank Arnold's patriotism is clearly expressed (letter, Jan. 22), he fails to take into account the American jobs that would be lost if everyone bought just American-made goods.

Importation is a thriving industry in this country that does require much American labor. Foreign goods also keep the cost of many American-made products within reach of the average consumer through competitive pricing. Moreover, many of the products that supposedly are foreign are actually made in foreign-owned plants in the United States. These provide much-needed employment for American workers.

Let us not be too critical of today's value-conscious consumer. Rather, we should focus on improving American-made products in order to preserve our place in worldwide markets. JAY STEAGALL ROANOKE
