ALLIED-SIGNAL MAY OUTLINE PLANT PLANS

Earl Smith, vice president for program management of Allied-Signal Automotive, will be the keynote speaker at the Feb. 21 annual meeting of the Regional Partnership of the Roanoke Valley. Smith's scheduled appearance is being taken as a sign that the company likely will resume construction of its $32 million disc brake plant in Roanoke County.

Allied-Signal last month said it had halted site preparation for the proposed plant and postponed until next Monday an announcement of its decision whether to proceed. The company cited the slow economy and the Persian Gulf war as its reason for halting work.

Beth Doughty, the partnership's research director, said Monday the economic development agency had reconfirmed Smith's willingness to speak after last month's statement. It indicates the company will continue the project in some form in the future, she said.

Smith, the executive in charge of seeking the site for the plant, is to talk about the state of the economy and its effect on the planned plant. He is to speak at 8 a.m. at the Roanoke Airport Marriott. Cost of the breakfast is $20. Reservations may be made by calling 343-1550. - Staff report
