HIGH-POWERED CAR WASTE OF TAX MONEY

I AM A law-abiding person. I think our law-enforcement agencies should have the best tools available, such as modern weapons and first-class patrol cars. But I think the purchase of the high-priced Camaro for Boones Mill's lone patrolman was a waste of the taxpayers' money.

Not so many years have passed, as I recall, since Boones Mill was hard-pressed for repairs to its water supply and wondering where the money would come from. It seems that this officer talked town officials into buying him a fancy play toy. The statement quoted in the Roanoke Times & World-News that if one life was saved it would be worth the difference in price is hogwash!

The same effect would come with a standard police car. If nothing else, the 1991 souped-up Camaro would endanger lives. Looking at the officer's picture in the paper, standing by the car, I get this message: "You good old boys bring your hot rod to Boones Mill and give me a run." ROY L. GROSS JR. BUCHANAN
