HOKIES HIT JACKPOT IN FOOTBALL RECRUITING

Virginia Tech received commitments Tuesday from Manor High quarterback Fred Lassiter and Stonewall Jackson linebacker Tewon Stevens, bringing to nine the number of football players the Hokies expect to sign off the Roanoke Times & World-News Top 25 list.

It is believed to be the most Top 25 players to commit to one school in a single year.

Tech wrapped up its recruiting Tuesday, and, if all the commitments are honored, the Hokies will sign 23 players during the period starting today.

In addition to Lassiter and Stevens, the Hokies received previously unreported commitments from defensive end John Bishock (6 feet 2, 235 pounds) from Palm Beach Gardens (Fla.) High School and defensive back Kwamie Lassiter (6-2, 185) from Butler County (Kan.) Community College.

Lassiter, who played at Menchville High School, is Fred Lassiter's older brother.

Bishock, who had 11 1/2 sacks as a junior, injured a knee in the third game this season and underwent arthroscopic knee surgery. "If we had been in position to make the playoffs, he had been OK'd to play," coach Mike Doyle said. "The doctor said he'll be fine."

Doyle said some of the Florida schools pulled off Bishock after the injury, but he took visits to Tech, Maryland, Wisconsin, Wake Forest and East Carolina. He reportedly had committed to Maryland during his visit to College Park, Md.

"Maryland was not in our building," Doyle said. "I told John, `One thing you ought to consider is who recruited you the hardest.' "

In other recruiting:

Virginia received a commitment from Greg Phoenix, a 6-5, 280 offensive guard who played his junior year at Patrick County High School before moving to Winston-Salem, N.C., where he was an all-area selection. Phoenix visited UVa, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Wake Forest and The Citadel.

The Cavaliers have received 20 commitments and are involved with three uncommitted players: All-America offensive lineman Russell Babb from Hunt High School in Wilson, N.C.; quarterback Symmion Willis from Mays High in Atlanta, and wide receiver Cedric Zachery from Southwest Dekalb High outside Atlanta.

Running back James Milliner from Annandale High announced he will sign with UCLA. Milliner was rated one of the top five prospects in Virginia after rushing for 2,249 yards and 33 touchdowns this past season. He visited Virginia Tech, North Carolina and Wake Forest.

Nathan Howard, an offensive lineman from Centreville who was rated one of the top 25 prospects in Virginia, picked Brigham Young over Air Force. Howard earlier had eliminated Virginia and North Carolina.

The lone uncommitted Top 25 player, offensive tackle Eric Workman from Graham High in Bluefield, is considering Wake Forest and West Virginia and hopes to reach a decision by the end of the week.

Maryland received commitments from two Virginians, defensive back Mike Lacy from Lake Braddock High in Burke and linebacker Kenny Green from Lake Taylor in Norfolk.

Running back Derek Fitzgerald from Episcopal High in Alexandria committed to William and Mary. Fitzgerald was one of five players listed at the top of the Second 25.
