The Lee Chapel museum downstairs will remain open.
The chapel was completed in 1868 under the supervision of Robert E. Lee during his tenure as president of what was then Washington College. The auditorium of the chapel is an integral part of the campus, serving frequently as the site for lectures, concerts, meetings and other cultural events.
The lower level of the chapel became the Lee Museum in 1928. It is the location of Lee's office and the Washington-Custis-Lee collection of portraits, as well as the Lee family crypt, where Lee, his wife, parents, all but one of his children and other relatives are buried.
