VMI PANEL HOLDING GULF WAR DISCUSSION

A panel discussion on the war in the Persian Gulf will be held at 7:30 tonight at Virginia Military Institute's Lejeune Hall. The public is invited.

The panel includes three local professors and a Marine Corps colonel who commanded the first Marine unit shipped to Saudi Arabia until two days before its deployment.

Col. John W. Ripley, professor of naval science in VMI's ROTC department and a highly decorated Marine veteran, was assigned to the VMI position and reported here Aug. 1. His unit was deployedAug. 3.

Also on the panel will be Frederic L. Kirgis Jr., professor of law and former Dean of the Law School at Washington and Lee University; Col. Wayne C. Thompson, professor of political science at VMI; and Maj. Bruce C. Vandervort, associate professor of history at VMI.

Cmdr. Blair Turner, head of the VMI history department, will moderate the panel discussion, which will be held on the 400 level of Lejeune Hall.
