For years, council has bought water from Occanneechi Orchards and distributed it to 158 connections. But the system does not comply with some provisions of the federal Clean Water Act, including those requiring adequate chlorination.
Town Attorney Dusty Rhodes said council must decide whether to help upgrade the Occanneechi system or dig its own well.
Council is seeking proposals from engineering firms interested in providing a preliminary assessment of town needs. Rhodes said no cost estimates of the study were available.
In the early 1980s, council dug a test well in anticipation of setting up a town water system, but the effort was put on hold during construction of the town's waste water treatment plant.
