FARM FRESH UPHELD IN UNION COMPLAINT

The National Labor Relations Board has upheld the result of an election last year in which employees of Farm Fresh Inc.'s central bakery voted against representation by a union. The Norfolk-based supermarket chain has announced plans to open stores in the Roanoke Valley.

On Aug. 23, employees voted 11-5 against joining the United Food and Commercial Workers union, which has been trying to organize Farm Fresh and several other local grocery chains.

The union protested the result, saying Farm Fresh managers illegally intimidated the bakery workers. Farm Fresh denied the accusations.

In a report dated Jan. 30, an NLRB hearing officer overruled the objections, citing a lack of evidence for some allegations and saying other protested actions by Farm Fresh managers were lawful. - Associated Press
