\ Two coal companies - AMVEST Minerals Corp. and Electric Fuels Corp. - said they plan to expand the production of a Powell Mountain joint venture in Lee County from 1.5 million tons to 3 millions a year. The expansion will add "a significant number of new jobs," they said.
\ Kroger Co. on Tuesday reported 1990 after-tax earnings of $83.3 million or 96 cents a share, up from a loss of $16.3 million or 23 cents a share in 1989. The Cincinnati-based supermarket chain with regional operations in Roanoke said sales for the year rose 7.6 percent to $20.3 billion. Fourth-quarter after-tax earnings were $67.8 million or 78 cents a share, up 1179 percent from $5.3 million or 7 cents per share; sales rose 7.1 percent to a record $4.9 billion.
