LANGLEY AIR BASE PLANS JOB CUTS

Nearly 3 percent of the work force at Langley Air Force Base could fall victim to the Pentagon's budget-cutting ax, base officials said.

Langley announced Monday that it expects to lay off about 1,000 military and civil service workers from its current force of 35,000 by 1993.

Of those jobs, about 230 would come from Langley's civilian work force of about 3,500. About 700 military positions - mostly from Tactical Air Command headquarters - are expected to be cut, command officials said.

Many of the 10,000 officers and airmen assigned to Langley Air Force Base have been deployed to the Persian Gulf.

Langley already had plans to cut 586 positions by Sept. 30, 1991, when the current federal fiscal year ends.
