SUSPECT IS ARRESTED IN BEATING OF MAN

A Roanoke man has been charged with attacking a man in the downtown area Tuesday afternoon, police said today.

A passing patrol officer found George Stevens, 50, of Vinton lying unconscious and bleeding from the head. He was discovered on Salem Avenue near Jefferson Street about 5:45 p.m.

After a witness pointed out a suspect, police arrested Robert Cunningham, 42, of Brambleton Avenue Southwest and charged him with malicious wounding.

Stevens was treated at the scene and taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
