INDEX CONTAINS INFORMATION ON CHARITIES

Q: How can I get information about the financial status of charities? - J.K., Catawba

A: Consult the second Annual Charity Index, a booklet published by the Council of Better Business Bureaus. It has information about finances and programs of national charitable organizations.

The index was produced by the CBBB's Philanthropic Advisory Service, which sets standards for charitable solicitations and issues information on thousands of organizations that solicit nationally.

The booklet includes information on national charities that generated the most inquiries in the past year, information on each charity's purpose and major programs, and financial summaries listing each organization's total income from the past fiscal year along with a breakdown of expenses into program, fund-raising and administrative categories.

To order the booklet, send a check or money order for $11.40 ($9.95 plus $1.45 for postage, handling and Virginia sales tax) to the CBBB Foundation, PAS/CBBB, Dept. 024, Washington, D.C. 20042-0024.

Salad dressing recall

Kraft USA of Glenview, Ill., said it is recalling some of its 8-ounce bottles of salad dressing in several states, including Virginia, because of chipped or cracked bottles.

The only varieties involved are Kraft regular and reduced-calorie dressings, and the Catalina flavor of the company's non-fat dressing. All the potentially defective bottles are stamped with a code containing the letter `A' and dated between May 20 and Oct. 22.

A chip or crack along the lip or neck of the bottle is visible to consumers when the cap is removed. The defect is the result of an equipment malfunction by a bottle supplier. Fewer than 1 in 100,000 bottles could be affected, the company said.

No consumers have reported finding defective bottles, but the company is removing them as a precautionary measure, Kraft said.
