BIG CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION PLANNED

Southwest Virginia's Chinese community is planning its biggest ever Chinese New Year celebration for Feb. 16.

The event, which will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Roanoke, is for the first time being sponsored by two area organizations, the Roanoke Chinese Association and the newly formed Overseas Chinese Association, which spans Roanoke and the New River valleys.

"In the past, we've just rented a hall and had the new year celebration catered, but we're really trying to do more with it this year," said Pearl Fu, program chairman for the Overseas Chinese Association.

The event, to be held from noon to 4 p.m., will include a buffet luncheon, Chinese classical music, a dragon dance, movies and an auction, with proceeds going to Roanoke Area Ministries.

Chinese New Year, the traditional celebration of harvest, is the biggest annual holiday in China, Fu said. There, it is celebrated for 10 days, and people give each other money wrapped in envelopes of red - the color that symbolizes good luck.

Fu said she expects about 200 people to turn out for the Roanoke celebration, which is open to the public. There are more than 120 Chinese families in the Roanoke and New River valleys, she added.

Tickets, which cost $7 in advance and $8 at the door, are available by calling 342-7739 or 774-4400, extension 634.
