AND HERE'S ANOTHER APPROACH

Westinghouse's Electronic Systems Group is taking a different approach in helping its laid-off employees find work.

The company ran full-page newspaper advertisements Wednesday promoting the workers it had to lay off to prospective employers.

The advertisements in The Baltimore Sun and The Washington Post were in the form of a memo to "Companies Seeking Qualified Personnel."

"We don't want to see these dependable, loyal workers go without jobs - they mean too much to us . . . both as employees and as human beings," the advertisement said.

Pittsburgh-based Westinghouse laid off 1,200 of its Baltimore-area employees last month after the Pentagon canceled the U.S. Navy's A-12 aircraft program for delays and cost overruns. - Associated Press
