OFFICE RAISES ESTIMATE OF COCAINE ABUSERS

The Bush administration's drug-control policy office, accused in Congress of underestimating the nation's population of hard-core cocaine abusers, revised its estimate on Wednesday to 1.7 million people - an addition of more than a million.

The previous figure of 660,000 was based on the government's Household Survey on Drug Abuse.

The new figure was announced at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the administration's new $11.7 billion drug strategy.
