SPEAKER'S MOTHER, MARY PHILPOTT, DIES

Mary Gertrude Philpott, the mother of Virginia House of Delegates Speaker A.L. Philpott of Bassett, died Wednesday. She was 92 and lived in the community of Philpott.

The daughter of the late Crockett Lee Prillaman and Sallie Bet Davis Prillaman, Philpott was born Nov. 23, 1898 in Henry County. She was the widow of John E. Philpott.

She is survived by her five children. Two daughters are Helen Palmour of Atlanta and Patricia Petty of Philpott. Her other two sons are Harry W. Philpott of Winston-Salem, N.C., and John D. Philpott of Martinsville.

Her survivors also include two brothers, two sisters, 20 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Friday at Collins Funeral Chapel of Bassett, with burial in the Philpott family cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home 7-8:30 tonight.
