VETERANS HONOR VINTON RESIDENTS

A Vinton Town Council member and two citizens were recognized Tuesday by the Roanoke Valley Veterans Council for their part in organizing a rally to support American troops in the Middle East.

Steven D. Goodwin, president of the Veterans' Council presented Councilman Ray Sandifer, Rick Svitzer and Carolyn Rector with certificates of appreciation, commending them for what Goodwin referred to as "some very extraordinary efforts" to make the Jan. 20 rally a success.

"Even though Vinton is the smallest of the four municipalities, it is by far the most active" in providing volunteers for various causes, Goodwin said. The rally, he added, was not the first such event in the valley, but it was the largest. Almost 400 people attended.

Goodwin also commended Svitzer and Rector for the storefront support center they opened this week at 103 Lee Ave. Citizens will be able to stop in for counseling or to find out how to send a message to a service member.

Rector said the center also will help other groups wishing to hold rallies to publicize them.
