Black history parade set Saturday in Salem

The Community Awareness Council will sponsor its second Black History Celebration Parade Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m.

The parade - carrying the theme "Keeping the Dream Alive" - will start at Longwood Park and move east along Main Street to Broad Street.

Roanokers appointed to state advisory board

Gov. Douglas Wilder has appointed Raleigh Campbell and Jan B. Garrett to serve on the Human Services Information and Referral Advisory Council.

Campbell has been the executive director of Roanoke's Council of Community Services since 1968 and was involved in the establishment of the council's Information and Referral Center.

Garrett serves on the council's board of directors and is active in voluntary activities in the Roanoke Valley.

Seminar to teach youth dangers of drug abuse

The fourth annual REACH America Drug Prevention Seminar for youth is scheduled for Feb. 16-17 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Shenandoah Life Insurance Co., 2301 Brambleton Ave. S.W.

The seminar, which teaches participants about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse, is offered free to students ages 14 to 19. Adult leaders, parents and others who have an interest in the area of youth substance abuse also are encouraged to attend.

Joe Stephens, a youth trainer with the National Federation of Parents, will conduct the training. In addition to learning about drug abuse, participants will be taught how to present lectures, demonstrations and skits on the subject to younger students. Participants also will be encouraged to organize drug-free student groups and activities in their communities.

REACH, which stands for Responsible Educated Adolescents Can Help (stop drugs), is a project of the National Federation of Parents. The Roanoke seminar is sponsored by the Virginia State Police Association, the Insurance Women's Association of Roanoke Valley, the Department of Motor Vehicles' District 2 Transportation Safety Division and Roanoke-area businesses.

Kazim Brass Band elects new officers

J.R. "Ace" Wall has been re-elected manager and Ted Bogsrud has been re-elected director of the Kazim Brass Band.

Other officers are David Hall, assistant band manager; Warren Orr, assistant band director; Wes Earnest, secretary; Dan Higgins, treasurer; Mike Campbell and Garrett Hudgins, quartermasters; and Bob McDaniel, librarian.

Members of the board of governors are John Wolfe, Scott Little, Max Leach, Chuck Cooper and Danny Ryan. Leach and Ralph Ruble are in charge of public relations.

Ruble also has been named Bandsman of the Year.
