SWING THING: Western Virginia jazz lovers have their choice of concerts this weekend. J. Plunky Branch and Oneness will play tonight at 8 at Radford University. Tickets are $5 for the public and $2.50 for students. For information call 980-7363 or 831-5420.

And Joe Kennedy Jr. and his quartet will pay tribute to African-American composers in their concert Saturday night at 8 at Donaldson Brown Auditorium at Virginia Tech.

FAT TUESDAY: The Arts Council of Roanoke Valley is having a Mardi Gras Fat Tuesday fund-raiser on Tuesday, naturally, from 7 to 10 p.m. at Charleys restaurant in downtown Roanoke.

The cost is $25 per person. The attractions will include food, drink and music. Organizers say you may wear a costume if you wish, but you are not to stay home if you don't want to.

DO LUNCH: Two short monologues will be presented at Mill Mountain's Centerpiece series on Wednesday at 12:15 p.m.

RHYTHM OF LOVE: Robin and Linda Williams, country folk who sing country-folk, will perform Saturday night at 9 at the Ellington Fellowship Playhouse in Lynchburg.

They should be on sale at the door, but to be sure you may call (804) 845-2162.\ > SOPHISTICATED SOUND: The Duke Ellington Orchestra will swing through Western Virginia for concerts Tuesday night in Covington and Thursday night at Virginia Tech.

The Tuesday concert will be at 8 o'clock at Covington High School under the auspices of the Alleghany Highlands Arts Council. Tickets are $15 for adults and $7.50 for students age 18 and under.

LIKE HOTCAKES: Tickets are going quickly for the Kronos Quartet concert Sunday night at 8 at Mill Mountain Theatre in Roanoke's Center in the Square.

The concert is part of the Arts Council's "One Night Stands." It will feature contemporary classical music from the post-modern quartet. Tickets are $12 for the general public and $9 for students and senior citizens. Information is at 342-5790.\ ONE MORE THING: Tickets remain available for Paul Simon's "Born at the Right Time" tour stop Sunday night at 8 at the Dean Smith Center of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Simon will be backed by a 17-piece band including jazz saxophonist Michael Brecker and drummer Steve Gadd, as well as musicians from Africa and South America.
