PUBLICATION MAKES RICE PLAYER OF YEAR

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jerry Rice has been selected NFL player of the year by The Sporting News.

Rice, who tied an NFL record with five touchdown receptions in a game against Atlanta, is the second straight 49er to win the award. Last year, San Francisco quarterback Joe Montana received the honor.

Miami Dolphins offensive tackle Richmond Webb was chosen rookie of the year. He is the first rookie tackle selected to play in the Pro Bowl. Last year's honored rookie was Detroit running back Barry Sanders.

\ Former Detroit Lion Reggie Rogers is free after serving a year in prison for the traffic deaths of three teen-agers in 1988. Rogers, 26, suffered neck and hand injuries when his vehicle ran a red light and struck a car carrying Kenneth Willett, 19, of Waterford Township in Oakland County, and Willett's cousins, Kelly Ess, 18 and Dale Ess, 17, both of Versailles, Mo. Authorities said Rogers was drunk when the crash occurred.
