HOUSE BILL WOULD END `EARNINGS TEST' TAX BITE

Legislation that would end the withholding of some Social Security benefits from workers over 65 was introduced Thursday with support from more than half the House.

The bill by Rep. Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., would eliminate the so-called "earnings test," under which Social Security withholds $1 in benefits for every $3 earned above $9,720 a year for those between 65 and 69.

Social Security also withholds $1 in benefits for every $2 earned above $7,080 by those under 65, but the Hastert bill would allow that provision to remain.
